ナミビアの砂漠
Directed by Yoko Yamanaka
Synopsis
Desert of Namibia follows a bipolar young woman who burns the candle at both ends. A portrait of an unidealized Tokyo gen-Z, that surprises with its incredible energy and irreverence.

gen z randomness - partying, open relationships, foodies, hedonism; regression into childhood for breakfast, mental disorders for dinner.

The worst person in the world in the lens of Haruki Murakami
It's a strange but fitting blend. A girl parched from a dry relationship, sets out to find a new oasis. But after finding a temporary source of refreshment, she soon finds herself thirsting once more. (punishment of NTR, right?)
The director captures the aridity and intensity of the relationship with brutal honesty. There are dark comedic in many scenes (although not as funny as the crew scrambling to restore the Thai subtitles. Let me watch peacefully English subtitles, please).
At first, I was shocked thinking Erika would only say one line. I braved the crowds (clowns in actually) of Loy Krathong enjoyers just for seeing her face on big screen (sorry if that sounds a little perverted, lol)

Review by Movie Good or Movie Bad? ★★★
Desert of Namibia fixates on the nihilism and hopelessness of Gen Z and thoughts about a bleak future through a young woman struggling with bipolar disorder, instantly creating a film that I imagine is relatable in ways that young people don’t often see, but quickly loses focus in a film that feels largely repetitive to a point. Comparisons are being made to The Worst Person in the World, which can not be denied, but I also can draw parallels between the ennui captured in Somewhere, and aren’t to the detriment of this film immediately. The unique nature of this film makes it all the more sad I can’t let go of the aimlessness.

Has some issues with how abrasive and messy it gets at points with some of its craft and storytelling touches but the central driving force of its central character and the claustrophobic Tokyo setting. Yuumi Kawai is impressive in a tricky role.

Our daily lives are inundated with all sorts of tedious conversations, conformity and so much tirelessly overbearing information whether useful or not yet causes for our brains to be constantly exposed to something to contemplate over, sometimes to the extent of overstimulation which Yamanaka captures effortlessly perhaps.
Living in these times of opportunistic environments, there’s nothing more frightening than facing one's own fears, past and future, but that is just one of the many adverse ramifications of growing up, and this film does quite the job of addressing those aspects while also demonstrating the vulnerability of young adults nowadays.
Just a small note but lines like「あ、紙ストローだ」 were really interesting to pick up as those added to creating and rounding up…

First film I’ve watched where the manic pixie dream girl actually gets diagnosed as manic — I’m not saying that as a funny line for a Letterboxd review I really enjoyed it as a development
Sound as conduit for new romantic feeling was so perfect, especially the glitchy shining music when she ran to meet him and the loud noise of the river <3

"Don't do that. It's meaningless."
You know those viral videos where pet owners set up a camera in their house and leave, so they can record the weird shit their pets do while they're not around? This movie is kind of like that. When the men leave, Yuumi Kawai can't control herself, starts to touch things she shouldn't, does offputting things that get herself hurt, and finds new and interesting ways to make her life harder. And the camera tracks it all. For the first 30 minutes, she's like a naughty puppy running between different houses to get pet and fed, exuding both sexy-cute and "dead inside" vibes.
Your tolerance for this movie will be determined by how much you…
